Biofuels offer the potential for significant reduction in Carbon Dioxide emissions (a greenhouse gas). It is accepted that savings of between 50% - 70% better than fossil petrol and diesel, and around 30% less than road fuel gases, are possible (CONCAWE/EUCAR/DG Joint research 'Well to Wheel' report ver1b Jan 2004 pp35 - click here for copy of this report in pdf format). A blend of 5% biofuel to 95% fossil fuel can deliver a 3% saving in Carbon Dioxide emissions. They can also reduce emissions of some tailpipe pollutants. If the raw materials are sourced from within the UK they can provide a domestic source of fuel supplies, and are defined as a renewable resource as the energy to produce them comes from the sun. They are also easily biodegradable, hence any spillage represents little danger to the environment. There are significant opportunities for rural producers of the arable crops to contribute to our fuel security, at the same time enhancing farmland biodiversity. These final points are of particular interest in the northeast of the UK, as crop yields of Oilseed rape are above average and production efficiencies are optimised. Indeed the UK is acknowledged as having both an ideal climate and excellent agricultural infrastructure thereby enabling lowest cost raw materials for the biofuel industry.
